Norfolk on the Move: School Designs, City Vibes, and Much More

Good afternoon,

Finally!  Norfolk City Council, the Norfolk School Board and Heartland Construction signed an Interim Agreement under the Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act (PPEA) to embark on a preliminary design for the new Maury High School.  This has been a long time in the making and long overdue.  This starts the train moving for the design, layout etc. for the new high school on the Maury property.  Once a timeline is more certain, I will share.  When the new Maury High School is constructed, the Norfolk School Board turns the old Maury High School back to the control of Norfolk City Council. At that point a decision will be made as to the future use of the school building. My desire is that the building is kept and repurposed into housing.  Thus, the exterior of the building would remain and have the beautiful historic look we all treasure.  Again, this is several years out but after years of waiting for the Norfolk School Board to make a decision, we are finally out of the gate.

Great news about the old Greyhound bus station in downtown Norfolk!  Norfolk City Council passed an ordinance approving the Purchase and Development Agreement where Norfolk is selling the property to Breeden Construction who is going to develop the property into apartments.  The development will encompass the full block. The design will incorporate the current bus station facade, which many love given the unique architectural look of that building.

I attended many Task Force meetings, other city meetings and held my Office Hours in July.  I learn a lot by just listening. Patiently waiting for others to finish speaking enables me to truly understand their real concerns. I am thankful people feel they can share their thoughts and concerns with me.

Norfolk City Council is on “break” meaning we don’t have official council meetings from mid-July to late August.  The work continues! While we may not meet on Tuesday nights the wheels keep turning.

I enjoy hearing from folks who get this monthly email newsletter. Your comments, feedback and hilarious thoughts about the pictures below are fun to read.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers!
