2023 is Off to A Great Start!

Good afternoon,

I hope you have had a great start to 2023.  For a long month January flew by very quickly!

Norfolk conducted a resident survey in 2022 and we learned some very valuable insights. The results were shared at a recent City Council meeting. A resident survey will be conducted every two years moving forward. I encourage you to take a look at the full results at this link:  https://www.norfolk.gov/Faq.aspx?QID=967

Highlights of the survey results include the following:
City services where Norfolk resident satisfaction was the same or higher than other mid-sized communities:

  • Fire and ambulance services and response time
  • Value of Norfolk libraries
  • Water and sewer services
  • Emergency management during a disaster (e.g., natural, man-made)
  • Customer service
  • Utility and solid waste services
  • Effectiveness of communication
  • As a place to work, live, and visit

Services that Norfolk residents gave high priority to focus upon over the next two years:

  • Police visibility in neighborhoods
  • Public schools
  • Code enforcement
  • Affordable housing & homelessness
  • Taxes
  • Condition of major city streets
  • Traffic flow on major streets
  • Communication and transparency

As more people consider driving electric vehicles there is greater need to have charging stations at homes and around the city. For those like me who don’t have a driveway or garage there is an option to receive an easement from the city to place a charging outlet on the city verge. I encourage you to learn more should you be interested. Here is a link to a page on the city website that explains the process.

It is budget season! We expect to receive the FY24 budget recommendation from City Manager Chip Filer in March.

The General Assembly in Richmond is in full swing and I look forward to sharing with you what legislation and budget amendments impact Norfolk after they conclude the 45-day session. By the way, all House and Senate seats are up for election in November 2023. The district lines have been changed and I encourage you to click on the links to see what district applies to your residence.
