Hello!
I hope you enjoyed a wonderful July 4th celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday. The fireworks and activities were great fun, and really hot.
June was filled with activities including Sail250, Juneteenth, and Pridefest, all taking place in downtown Norfolk. The Parade of Sails kicking off Sail250 was stunning. In all my years living in Norfolk, I had not seen the Parade of Sails before. This year was the year to see it for the first time, and I loved seeing the tall ships from all over the world. Over 500,000 people attended the Sail250 events over the course of the weekend. Norfolk was beautiful, safe, inviting, and really shined for visitors and residents. I had the opportunity to meet sailors from India, France, and Chile. It was fascinating to hear about their travels around the world.
On Saturday, June 13, Norfolk held a community listening session at 2707 Granby Street with Park Place residents and business owners to discuss what the future could hold for this location. Once a privately owned strip mall with terrible crime issues for decades, the city bought the property several years ago. At the listening session, residents and business owners shared their insights and vision. The future could be residential home ownership, retail, or a mix of both. Norfolk is assimilating the information and, along with other inputs, will come forth with a recommendation. The recommendation will result in a far more improved and safer area for all.
July 1 marks the start of the new fiscal year. Lots of projects will start getting underway. Chrysler Hall is officially closed to start renovations, with completion expected in 2028. Shows and events that typically used Chrysler Hall, like the Norfolk Forum Speaking Series, will use other venues such as the Harrison Opera House. The renovation is much needed, and I look forward to seeing the beautiful facility in two years.
Enjoy your summer.
Cheers!
Courtney
