Happy New Year!
I hope you enjoyed a great holiday season. The year is off to a fast start with the long month of January already behind us. The weather has been brutally cold here in Norfolk and the snow and ice have made for some interesting driving and extended school closures.
Curious about the Metronet in Norfolk? Here is an update of Metronet’s installation of the fiber internet in Norfolk. They are 65% complete with 6,812 customers and should be finished by the end of 2025. Below is a map of the current status of the installation and some links for you to learn more.

As everyone knows, the City of Richmond was without water for many days in the early part of January. Many have asked me about Norfolk’s water and how we protect our water infrastructure so that we don’t have the same experience as Richmond. Norfolk City Manager Pat Roberts shared that our Department of Utilities recently conducted a self-assessment. Norfolk has redundancies in place for infrastructure and operations. We operate two separate water treatment plants with redundancies and independent supplies for electrical power and emergency generators. There are licensed water treatment operators on duty 24/7. We have on-call mechanics, electricians, and IT support on the ready. We have emergency plans, cyber security protocols and extensive training for crews. There is much more in place but I wanted to at least share those highlights. Norfolk has long been known for having excellent water quality and infrastructure and we continue to do so.
The renovation of Lafayette Park is complete with the final step of co-striping the tennis courts for pickleball. So, for you pickleball lovers, give it a try and don’t forget there are lights for the courts! Lakewood Park is slated next for renovation where we will reconstruct 3 tennis courts, add 3 pickleball courts and 1 multi-use court. New shelters and picnic tables are included in this park upgrade as well.
Cheers!
